Affiliate marketers don't go very far in their research without asking, 'What is Clickbank Gravity'? Most people are familiar with Clickbank as an online marketplace and payment processor for information product vendors and affiliates. However, figuring out which product an affiliate chooses to promote is not an easy task. Clickbank has tried to make this easier by offering a series of metrics by which to judge a vendors product offering.
However, as with most statistics, it is easy to misunderstand and read into these different numbers and in so doing, cost yourself a lot of time and effort promoting offers that won't sell. Let's first discuss the first common misperception relating to Clickbank gravity.
Gravity is not the same as popularity- Clickbank gravity is not the same metric is popularity. If we define the popularity of a product the amount of sales that it is making, as well as a large number of affiliates who are selling it, gravity does not accurately represent this number. What gravity does show is an average level of performance of a product over an 8 week "lookback" period. This period begins in the current week and goes backwards 8 weeks from there. Gravity is really more of a measure as how many affiliates are actually selling a product at any given time (not promoting, but actually achieving sales). A product with a gravity of 1 could mean that 1 affiliate has sold 1 product in the current week. Consequently, if that product does not do another sale for 7 weeks, than that product would have a gravity of much less than 1, because as time goes by, the gravity number gives less weight to the weeks as they go further back in time. On the other hand, you could have 1000 affiliates who each sold 1 unit of the product 8 weeks ago. If the product had not made any sales since then, it may only have a gravity of 1, purely because the product hadn't made any sales in the previous seven weeks. So gravity really measures the number of affiliates making sales on a given product over a specified 8 week period of time, with more weight being given to the more recent sales. An example where this may be deceptive is on a new product where many affiliates rush in the first week, and then few sales are made thereafter. For a period of time, the gravity would be high, but would taper off dramatically by the 8th week.
Gravity of greater than 1- means that at least one sale or more has occurred in the last 8 weeks. Usually a product such as this may be worth looking at.
Gravity is a measure of sales breadth, not depth- gravity more accurately represents how many affiliates are selling a product over time, as opposed to just a few affiliates selling a lot of the product. Therefore a product with a gravity of 300, may indicate a product offering that is too competitive to be successful in because many affiliates are selling many units consistently over time.
