What Is The Reason That People Work?

One of the worst reasons I've ever heard in answer to "Why work?" was "To survive." Now, I don't know about you, but the notion of sheer 'survival' does not sound very appealing to me. I imagine eating roots, trying to catch raccoons and turtles, and rubbing sticks together to make fire. I guess my point boils down to this: survival is the last resort before death- it is not a way to live. Survival assumes a temporary state until you get rescued or build a homestead.

What people really mean by that "to survive" moan is "to maintain a lifestyle below the one which would really make me happy but have to put up with until a break comes along." However, I do need to insert a very tragic caveat here before going further: by work, I do not mean slavery, migratory farming, or sweatshops. That is another topic altogether.

If you live in most parts of this world, even in slums, it isn't really all that hard to feed, clothe, bathe, and shelter yourself. And also in most places, including places such as India, there are organizations and agencies that you can go to for assistance to provide you with at least the basic necessities (I know- I've done it).

A lot of people in this world place far too much value on the size of their income over the quality and nature of their work. For the quality and nature of one's work will be a much more accurate predictor of personal happiness than income ever will. But people work to make money so that can buy things. The problem is they hardly have time to use the things they buy and grow bored with them anyway. And in the meantime they continue to feel like slaves in boring jobs that may or may not produce much of any value to society at all. Well, at least I'm sure I know why I work! I love my job, but it was a bumpy road to get here.
