What Is Twitter All About And Does It Really Matter?

Very simply, Twitter is one of the new breed of Web 2.0 websites - a microblog, to be precise - that allows registered users to communicate with one another - and the world at large, if they so chose - about whatever's on their mind.

Those messages - or Tweets, as they are called - range from the wretchedly banal ("I am having a bath right now") to the deeply disturbing ("Government soldiers have stormed the square and are beating protesters with clubs") and all points in between.

Anyone with access to the Internet is free to join and use Twitter.

It's estimated that there may be as many as two hundred million Twitter accounts worldwide (it's worth nothing that a significant percentage are, reportedly, inactive).

The high level of activity of many Twitter users is also worth noting The total number of Tweets that have been shared on Twitter since its inception is approaching 30 billion, as of this writing.

When you combine Twitter's widespread popularity and extraordinarily high levels of activity with the fact that Twitter makes it possible for any Twitter user to see - and potentially connect with - anyone else who uses Twitter (from political leaders and movie stars to local business and your friendly neighbourhood librarian), you should start to appreciate the importance of Twitter as a marketing avenue.

It's not unreasonable to say that Twitter could be, for some, the greatest list building tool they could possibly every lay their hands on.

And it doesn't have to take ages to build up a list of followers on Twitter. In fact, it's not uncommon for fresh accounts to go from zero followers to tens of thousands over the course of a few short weeks.

How much of an impact could a targeted list of a couple of thousand - or ten thousand or more - people have on your marketing results?

Now you should feel that you know the answer to the burning question "what the heck is Twitter and what good is it to me."
