What Is Visitors Insurance?

Visitors insurance, also known as travelers medical insurance, is an international health insurance coverage made available to U.S. and non-U.S. citizens traveling outside of their native country for business or pleasure.

Non-U.S. citizens that are likely to qualify for visitors insurance are Green Card holders, non-immigrant Visa holders and temporary residents. Anyone over the age of two weeks can qualify for most international health insurance plans. Coverage can be for as little as five days up to two years and is usually renewable if there are no breaks.

International health insurance coverage maximums can go as high six figures with a choice of deductible. Although there are a variety of plans that cover most travel itineraries, the majority of plans cover all or most of the costs for intensive care, emergency room, inpatient/outpatient services, hospital room and board, local ambulance service and accidental death and disbursement.

Exclusions for most visitors insurance are AIDS-related illnesses, pre-existing medical conditions such as pregnancy, mental or nervous disorders, immunizations and other routine medical procedures and the transplant of organs and tissue. Also not covered are injuries resulting from illegal acts such as the use of narcotics, excessive alcohol consumption or the act of committing a major crime.

Sports activities are not covered in most insurance plans but can be purchased as optional coverage for injuries sustained while participating in amateur as well professional sports. Optional coverage plans are also available for lost luggage, non-participant terrorism, end of trip and identity theft.
