What Is Wrong With Us, America? Healthcare Help Needed!

That's right: what is wrong with us? Why is it that we do not have a socialized healthcare system in place in America? This is the land of the free, the place where opportunity is available to all...supposedly. How can there be opportunity if people don't have their most basic need: their life?

If people cannot live due to a lack of healthcare, they most certainly are not free. The answer is Universal Healthcare. We need to do something to stop people from dying needlessly, such as my brother who was a working American that died in 2005 of a brain bleed. The hospital surgeon said that his death was preventable, if only he had proper checkups and treatments beforehand.

My brother worked his tail off in a national upscale restaurant chain for over 13 years, but was never offered health insurance coverage. Now, let's flip the coin and go into another environment. In my previous job, I worked full time and had health insurance benefits. I could go to the doctor or hospital any time, and know that I would have coverage. Sure, there was some out of pocket expense, but it was livable.

What makes me sick is that my brother didn't get healthcare when he desperately needed it (he had been having seizures untreated for two years prior to his death!), but people that I worked with at my job were going to the doctor two or three times a month! Why were they going? Some of them ADMITTED that they often went to the doctor as an excuse to get extra time off of work.

So let's take a long hard look at our current system. That's what we've chosen. We do not choose to cover everyone, just some. That's right: we! We are paying into the system one way or another, whether it's by paying for insurance benefits when they are offered, or supporting the companies who offer insurance to their employees by buying their products or services. One way or another, we are paying for it.

So why do we not set up a system where everyone can get care: Universal Healthcare? We should do this. Sure, there are a few disadvantages, such as a longer waiting list at the doctor's office. Is that bad? No!

Think about it for one second. My brother might have to wait a month, but he could get in, instead of dying after two years totally untreated. On the other hand, those women in my office workplace who were going to the doctor just to get time off work might not be able to go so often. Oh my, they, too, might have to wait a month to get to the doctor, rather than going once a week! Big deal!

This is a disgusting reality and Universal Healthcare is the answer. Make the right choice and vote for a candidate who you believe will put into place a healthcare system that will truly cover EVERYONE, without exception.
