What It Takes To Become An Outstanding Guitar Player
In one word someone would just say to practice to get better at the guitar, but it's more complicated than that. There are three focus areas that you should really work on to become a much better guitarist. Learn to understand the music versus mimicking the music. There is nothing wrong with learning songs, solos, and riffs. It's great practice. Your fingers and hands are getting the training needed to improve. But if that's all it is then you are simply mimicking other guitar players. The big key or secret that separates intermediate and advanced guitar players isn't just improving technique. The key is understanding the music. To understand the music you need to study music theory. It doesn't sound like the most exciting idea in the world, but it's the truth. All the awesome guitar players have put in the time to understand music. From now on when you do a guitar riff, identify the key the riff is in, the scale that was use, the techniques that are used, and why the guitar player chose those notes. It will help you start to understand the music. Improvisation. Once you learn scales it's much easier to do improvisation. Sit down with songs and just start doing your best to make up your own riffs and solos. Get this creativity going and start making up your own style of play. No one has to listen at first so try your best. Ear training. Hardly anyone is born with perfect pitch. This doesn't matter cause the ear can be trained. Do ear training exercises. An example of this is to listen to a riff then do your best to reproduce it on your guitar. The better your ear gets the faster you can hear something and do this on guitar.
