What Kinds Of Dogs Do Most Americans Own?

Americans are into the trend of having a dog. Whether it’s to guard their house, to keep their children in company, to bring along for a vacation or to have any personal reason, they just can’t get enough of having a dog. As research shows, pet ownership increases every year in the USA. Pet product sales have skyrocketed high each and every year. Imagine that: over a million leashes, treats, dog food and other products are shipped and sold. This proves that America is getting into the trend of owning a dog.

It really makes you wonder: what kinds of dogs do most Americans own? They don’t just go owning dogs without a purpose right? It’d be nothing but an all-show if the dogs they owned didn’t have a purpose. So here are the kinds of dogs most dogs own:

1. Guard dogs and watch dogs
Americans feel they need security in their homes. Sure, they can install those expensive home security systems but they want to have something that can signal them of any threat that approaches their houses. This is why two of the kinds of dogs most Americans own are guard dogs and watch dogs. Dogs like Rottweiler and Dachshund are perfect for this role. They can signal the families by barking or by smell.

2. Family dogs
Of course one of the kinds of dogs owned by most Americans is the family dog. You can never go wrong with this one: this one is a popular choice. Dogs like the Labrador and Beagle fit in this category. They ‘re eager to please their families and are always there to keep the mood upbeat. You can already tell by the way they approach people; always humbling, always getting their attention and always giving some love.

3. Show dogs
You can already see this one coming: show dogs. Poodles, Shih tzus, Chihuahuas… these dogs are the show dogs. While some of these dogs are also part of the family dog kind, they can still be classified as show dogs. You see these dogs a lot: all dressed up as girls, as boys, as fashion models and as figurines.

4. Training dogs
Another kind of dog is the training dog. Almost any dog fits this genre as long as they have a willing attitude to do the training put up to them. They’re the kinds of dogs that are always there to help anyone when they train like maybe working out or doing training for sports. They’re also participating in shows to showcase their talents. But mostly, these dogs are sports-oriented so active dogs fit this category.

5. Seeing-eye dogs and other dogs that help the handicapped
These dogs help out the handicapped. From the blind to the deaf, these dogs were trained to help handicapped people live their lives peacefully. A lot of Americans own them because they want the handicapped to feel they are a part of society and therefore they want to have these dogs help them out day in, day out. Dogs like the Golden Retriever are trained to keep them company and assist them in any way they can.

These are the kinds of dogs most Americans own. The one thing they all have in common is they have a purpose. They don’t own for the sake of owning them; they own them because they’re giving these living things a purpose in life. So when you’re buying your own dog, what purpose is it going to have in life?
