What Makes A Trading Pin Valuable?

Many people enjoying assembling and trading different types of collections. Among the most popular trading items are pins. The pins used in trading are often created by companies to promote their products. Pins are also sometimes made to promote a notable occasion, such as a sporting event, a community parade or a political gathering. When you are trading pins, it is necessary to have some idea of their relative value. It may be that your pin is worth several of the ones the person you are trading with is offering to you. There are a number of things to consider when evaluating the value of a trading pin, although there are exceptions in each case.

Popularity

A major factor in the value of a trading pin was its popularity when it was originally produced. For example, an election pin made for a candidate who became President would be far more valuable than one for an obscure third-party candidate no one even remembers. The current popularity is also significant. A pin produced to promote a product might have been popular at the time because of all the hoopla. However, it might have become less popular later when the product fizzled.

Quantity Produced

Another factor influencing the value of a pin is the number produced at the time. Supply and demand will dictate that a market flooded with millions of the same pins will not be interested in paying a great deal for any one of them. There is one exception to this point though.

Number Remaining

Even if a vast number of a particular style of pin were created, this might not reduce the value if, for some reason, there are very few actually remaining. The older a pin is, the less likely it is that someone will be able to find one, even if they were mass-produced originally. In addition, the greater age itself might add to the value.

Quality of Materials

As might be expected, the quality of the pin matters. Pins that are made with poor quality materials will be less valuable than better-made pins. Pins made from tin, brass or some other study material will have a greater value than ones made from aluminum or cheap plastic. The quality of printing on the pins will also have an effect on the value. Images with bright, vibrant colors and high-resolution images will have a higher value.

Current Condition

In addition to the quality of the materials used to make the pin, the current condition of the pin is also an issue. If it is scratched, chipped along the edges, or the hardware on the back is no longer functional, the value will be reduced. The highest value pins will be those that are closest to mint condition. These are most often pins that were never used, but were instead immediately stored as part of a collection.

Current Events

The final factor that can temporally increase the value of a pin is current events. A pin issued to promote the release of a movie or video game might have declined in value since then. However, the release of a sequel or the release of a remade version of the original can, for a short time, make the older pin a bit more valuable again simply because of the increased visibility.
