I was mesmerized as I watched the scene where Daniel practices his secret weapon kick, atop a rock on a stunning beach. It's a beautiful shot in movie terms, but it seems a little too warm and fuzzy to me for a karate film.

Now, I don't claim to be martial arts movie master (or an aikido aficionado for that matter) but I do know that no karate film is complete without an element of swagger. Today you've got to have style to keep a story alive. Take escaping an ambush through a burst of fire. That's style.

Another version of The Karate Kid was released in 2010. When compared with the 1984 film the update is not only modern but the storyline hooks viewers more effectively. We worry about Jaden Smith wondering the dangerous streets of China alone, definitely when that intimidating bully is around. The remake is set apart due to a little something extra, style.

It may seem like a stretch but, the tale of the new and old Karate Kid films can be likened to product packaging.
