What Site Will Make Your Greenhouse Prosper?

Where you choose to place your greenhouse can affect how successful it is. Plan this step carefully or you may face issues down the road that you wouldn't have had you thought this out fully beforehand.

Choosing a Site for Your Greenhouse

Choosing the site for your greenhouse needn't be complicated. But, you do need to consider: drainage capabilities, land slopes, utility locations, sunlight exposure, and how it will look in your choice of locations.

Obviously, a plot that is fairly level, with good sun exposure, is best. Is there large vegetation around that may affect drainage? What about tree roots? Those you must be careful of too - they could push up into your greenhouse's foundation and destroy it. Make sure nearby trees are not going to block sunlight as well.

Successful Greenhouse Positioning

Unrestricted sunshine is essential. Watch out for trees (even large shrubs), building, hills, etc.

Live in the North where it is colder? Go southern on your property for your greenhouse. This will give you maximum sunlight, even in the winter months. Live in the South? You may want to position your structure where there is partial shade so that plants that thrive in that type of light can benefit.

Will you be attaching the greenhouse to an existing structure? This could seriously limit your options. Make sure that sunlight exposure and drainage are taken care of, above all. You don't want your home shading it, nor do you want the drainage to go directly into your home's foundation!

Make sure that you can run water to your greenhouse. Also, you may want electricity. Can you run it to the structure easily?

A poorly placed greenhouse can quickly become a thorn in any gardener’s side. Choosing a site and positioning your greenhouse well can help you produce more impressive crops and enjoy your greenhouse gardening hobby for years to come. Consider the lay of the land, drainage potential, location of your utilities, and sunlight exposure for the best results.
