What Size Kettlebell Should Women Start With

Choosing the appropriate size of your kettlebell is crucial to get the most out of your workout routine with the least amount of effort. There are a couple of factors that govern what size kettlebell should women start with, but first a bit of overview on available sizes.

Available kettlebell sizes

Kettlebell sizes run from 4kg (8.82lbs) all the way up to 48kg (106lbs) and every size in between. Commonly used sizes are 8kg (17.6lbs), 12kg (26.4lbs), 16kg (35.2lbs), 20kg (44lbs) and 24kg (52.8lbs), to name a few sizes. Kettlebell designs come in all shapes, grip handles and sizes so make sure you have comfort in mind when purchasing yours.

For those of you who don't workout regularly, a 8kg (17.6lbs) kettlebell is the best weight to start off. Even if some of you may find it heavy, you can use both arms to workout and progress until you become strong enough to work with one arm exercises only. For the more advanced of you that workout regularly, a 12kg kettlebell would be sufficient.

The most important thing is to choose such a weight so that you can do your entire workout properly. You won't get the results you seek if you have sloppy form or struggling with the weight. This will affect your training results, so decrease the weight and let your body adapt at its own tempo. Once you find the weight too light then you can increase the weight.

Additional factors when choosing your kettlebell

For ergonomic reasons for your wrist and RSI (repetitive stress injury) choose a kettlebell handle that's curved as it's more friendly on the wrists. This helps with grip and reduces stress on your wrist while working out.

Choose a handle with a quality finish and paint job! You don't want your hands and skin to suffer if the paint job starts to break, chip, etc.

Also final but not least of importance - choose a kettlebell with a flat bottom so it can rest safely on the ground.
