What The Schwinn Airdyne Dual Action Bike Does Poorly
1. These are noisy... very noisy. Not much chance to listen to quiet music. These bikes generate lots and lots of noise. That's because you turn a big fan as you pedal. Pedal faster, to generate more load, and the fan makes more and more noise. A later model Schwinn Airdyne Evolution Comp bike addresses the noise by reducing the size of the fan and replacing the chain drive with a belt drive. 2. Sans computers... Many bikes are magnetic resistance, including the Schwinn recumbent bikes like the Schwinn 140 recumbent and even the less expensive Schwinn Active 20 Series recumbent exercise bike. With electronic drives you also get computer controls. That makes it possible to build in workout routines for a more interesting ride. No magnetic drives and computers here on the Airdyne however. Just a simple, rugged machine proven over decades in homes, gyms and fitness centers. I devised a simple workout plan that doesn't need a computer. It's certainly true that lack of electronics makes it necessary to improvise to make rides more interesting. 3. Balmy breezes... May be gale force winds better describes what gets kicked up. If you don't like cooling breezes, you may be annoyed by the wind... The cool factor may be a plus in hot weather but not so much in other times. The Evolution Comp kicks up less wind since the fan is smaller and the wind is a bit further from the rider too, which may be a plus. 4. No new one needed. There won't be the thrill of replacing the bike with a newer model. It's hard to wear out even one Airdyne. Certainly Schwinn must get few repeat sales of Air-Dynes. Maybe that explains why the price is as high as it is. Schwinn only gets money from you once with an Airdyne. 5. Arms too. The dual action bikes like this work you shoulders and arms as well as legs. If you want, you can just work with your legs though. You can just work arms and shoulders. But in either case, it's work if you want it. That makes for a more balanced exercise bike workout. It does still let you work hard with your larger muscles which is a fast way to better results. The bikes by working muscles make it possible to increase metabolism and thus make long-term weight loss more likely. 6. Reclining is out... No recumbent on this bike. It is an upright after all... Seat is well padded but not a recliner. It's fitness work of a rigorous sort if you work at it. The position for pedaling that works best is largely just a matter of preference. Upright suits some folks better and some prefer reclining to pedal. If you want a stationary bike that's made to last, the Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike is worth a look. This is a simple, rugged machine that will help you burn fat and get fit. The more balanced sort of workout is also a distinct advantage too.
