What To Do During A Winter Power Outage

At times during the winter, you will experience a power outage. This is typically caused by snow and ice that is breaking the power lines leaving you without constant and reliable power. When this situation happens, there are things that you need to do to make sure that everyone and everything will remain safe.

The first thing you should do is to unplug major appliances and electronics in your home. The reason is that the power might flicker on and off for awhile as things are fixed. Even with surge protection, it's just a good thing to do to protect your expensive electronics.

Go around and make sure that everyone in your home is doing well especially any children. The sudden loss of power can be scary especially at night for your children.

Make sure you call the power company. Your home might be the only one without power or your whole city might have lost it. Either way, report it so that it can start being fixed quicker.

Before the outage, try to have some supplies ready just in case. Have extra food at home. Get plenty of flash lights. Have an emergency radio to hear about what is going on. Keep any medical supplies you will need. Fill up containers of water to have something to drink just in case you run out of water.

Have things at home that will help you stay warm. This might be extra blankets, clothing, and even a back up power generator to power a small heater to keep you warm.

Be very skeptical about going out especially if there is a major winter storm. If you get stuck, it might take days for someone to come find you. If you have to go out, bring supplies with you that you could live on for a few days just in case. Be proactive and get everything now so that you won't have to go out in dangerous conditions.
