What To Know About Acne

Much has been said about acne all these years but it is now clear that very few people have knowledge about the diseased condition. It is a diseased state of the skin that is characterized by various symptoms, some of which are redness, pimples, plugged pores, nodules or cysts etc. It is most of the time found on the face but can occur in any part of the body such as the shoulder, upper arm, neck etc. and it is usually common with the teenagers and young people in their early twenties. But it can also affect people of age thirty and above and the severity of the disease depends on individuals.

Over activity of the sebaceous glands in the skin is the major cause of acne. The oily substance, called sebum, secreted by the sebaceous glands lubricates the skin and the roots of hair. Testosterone, a sex hormone present in both male and female, but more in male, is the major initiator of the over activity of the sebaceous glands. But for people with acne, there is excessive secretion of sebum which leads to the building up of follicles which results in the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. This may be the end of acne development in some individuals while it can go beyond this stage in some other people. Some individual may develop a type of bacteria (propionibacterium) that use sebum as food and produce harmful substances in the body that can cause redness and irritation.

Several means of treatment can be applied in curing acne. They may be prescription medication, including both oral and topical medicines, or home made treatment. For topical treatment, azeliac acid can be used so also antibiotic lotions and retinoids. Actually, Benzoyl peroxide is the most commonly used medication but azeliac acid can be used as an alternative because it does not cause skin to sore like Benzoyl peroxide.

Using retinoids is like using vitamin A, and it is rubbed into the affected area once or twice in day. The major function of antibiotic lotions is to control the bacteria causing acne. Concerning oral treatment, oral retinoids, antibiotic tablets and contraceptives (majorly for women) can be used. But the best solution is always in consulting a general physician or a dermatologist.
