What Wiccan Magic Is Really All About
We can define magic as the intentional manipulation of the force which most people term “luck” by means of the deliberate cultivation of the faculty which most people term “intuition”. For most people, luck and intuition are rather haphazard; but witches try to control them consciously. Wicca magic is very different from the way the popular media portrays it. In the movies and on television witches are portrayed as possessing supernormal powers with which they were born, such as repelling or freezing enemies, making things disappear, etc. This is untrue. Witches are like everybody else, but are perhaps a bit more intuitive and psychic than the average person, and more willing to trust in their impulses without needing as much validation or support from other people. Witches are more rebellious than most and not as afraid of the consequences of being rebellious. Usually in childhood they realize that they’re somehow different, that they don’t fit in, and probably they were rejected for this by their schoolmates and family. Witches soon learn not to take for granted the assumptions everyone else around them is making, but to go off on their own – and usually they are punished for this. Thus, it is not true that witches have supernormal power, or use wicca magic for getting what they want in some occult way other than what everyone is doing anyway. From the witches’ point of view, most of the people around them are acting with both hands – their intent and intuition – tied behind their back. Most people seem to be paralyzed by fear of rejection, which they learn from their society and parents. Thus most people see witches’ use of their “hands” – their intent and intuition – as being supernormal. But witches do not have any power above what other people possess. They merely use their power. They use intuition to pick up what is really going on in their surroundings instead of relying on what they have been told; and they use intent to act instead of seeking approval from others. Most witches wouldn’t even think of themselves as witches, since wiccan magic comes so naturally to them that they don’t give what they’re doing a thought. Witches who happen to be capitalists or academics or Christians would scoff at being thought of as witches. But anybody who applies witchcraft – i.e., reliance on intuition and intent – to get what they desire from life, must properly be considered a practitioner of wicca magic. Wicca magic is simply a matter of fearlessly applying intuition and intent to the problems of everyday life. |
