What You May Not Know About Cycle Stands

If you have tried parking your bike somewhere you will have found it difficult to do so. When you do find somewhere though it will generally be a bike stand. There are many types of cycle stands and some of them are designed to cater for different types of bike.

One type of cycle stand is known as the “Sheffield Rack” and this is the modern version. This allows for multiple bikes to be attached to one stand and so is very efficient in its use of space. Earlier versions of bicycle stands would allow for just the attachment of a wheel and usually consisted of a grooved piece of concrete in the ground. However, they were susceptible to being stolen due to the simple fact that a thief only had to separate a wheel from the rest of a bike in order to be able to steal it.

These stands are becoming more important in the UK as there has been an explosion in the number of people using their bikes. Clogged roads, the cost of other types of travel, concern at global warming and the desire for increased fitness have all contributed to more people cycling. Between 2000 and 2007 the number of cyclists in London rose 83% and so demonstrates the need to excellent cycle stands.

The consideration of where to install a bike rack in a public environment is very important as it determines how often it will get used so placing it in a location which is not highly visible to the public renders it as ineffective as one which has poor security. It should also have space away from pedestrians so that they are not obstructed by cyclists parking their bikes and so that cyclists can safely and securely park their bike.
