What You Need To Know About Living Off The Grid

With energy prices soaring and resources declining, many people are wanting to covert to solar homes and live off the grid. When most people think of living off the grid, they think they'll have to sacrifice modern conveniences and this is something only for tree huggers or people living in remote locations. The truth is, living off the grid is easy for anyone. Granted, if you run your washer and dryer several times a day or have 3 large freezers in your garage, living off the grid will simply mean you need more resources to product that much more energy.


New technology has made living off the grid very easy. The components you need today are much more efficient and easier to use than in the past. This means this is within the realm of almost everyone who wants to quit paying the electric company.

Using renewable resources is fairly simple. You need to harness energy from the sun or wind, convert the energy to the current appropriate for you house using an inverter and then store any excess energy in batteries. The power stored in the batteries can be used during times of higher usage or on days when energy from the sun or wind may not be as great.

Living off the grid also requires very little maintenance. The batteries are about the only thing that need attention once the system is set up. You'll also need to monitor your supply so you don't use more energy than you have stored. The main key to successfully living off the grid is to make sure the size of your system is large enough to meet all of your energy needs.

There are many benefits to alternative energy and solar homes. One of the best things about living off the grid is that you'll never have to worry about a power outage again. When your neighbors are fumbling around in the dark due to a black out, you'll be warm and have light since you can draw energy off your batteries. Of course, this may also mean you'll have regular visitors when the power does go off!

In addition, you can install your own solar or wind generation system much cheaper than you can have it done professionally. This also makes it easier for just about anyone to get off the grid.
