What And When Exactly Is Father’s Day?

It can be quite difficult to know exactly when Father’s Day is because it changes each and every year. It is even celebrated on different dates in different countries. There may be subtle and not subtle hints that it is just around the corner. Your dad may be asking your mum how Mother’s Day was for her. In addition, most shops, pubs and stores will have promotions especially for Father’s Day. Once you see the signs, it might be time to think of gift ideas for your dad’s special day. After all, even if the dates may vary, this special day for dads only happens once a year.

The very first Father’s Day was suggested by someone named Sonora Smart Dodd. This was more than a century ago – during the 1900’s. This day has always been a day for appreciating and thanking one’s dad. Since that time, it has been regularly celebrated on the third Sunday of the month of June. Therefore, next year, Father’s Day will fall on June 17, 2012. Countries that follow this date includes majority of North America, South America and Europe. Other countries that have it on the third Sunday of June include South Africa, China, India, Pakistan and the Philippines. There are other countries that do not use that date. In Spain, Italy, Portugal as well as Belgium, March 29 is Father’s Day. In Germany, this special dad’s day always coincides with another special day called Ascension Day. This occurs 40 days after Easter and it is called Men’s Day. Unlike other parts of the world, for Germans, Men’s Day is a public holiday. In Scandinavian countries like Norway, Sweden and Finland, this day occurs on the second Sunday of November. However, Danish people celebrate it on June 5. Brazil has this special day on the second Sunday in August. In New Zealand and Australia, it is on the first Sunday of September.

It can be a simple gift to tell him that you love him and thank him for putting up with you for all those years. Dads usually appreciate useful and more practical gifts.
