What Are File Association Errors And Why Registry Cleaners Remove Them
Registry is the core database of windows where it stores almost all the information which it requires to function properly. Third party programs also store information in windows registry either for their own purpose or to tell windows to do something for them.
In this article we will discuss about a common error in windows registry which is about Invalid File Associations. Every file on windows has an extension which is also knows as shell extension. You must have noticed while installing some programs they display a list of file extensions and ask you to associate them with it.
By doing this actually program is telling windows that when a user double clicks to open a file with particular extension, it should open automatically with the program. This is done by adding certain keys in windows registry.
Now how the files associations become invalid; unfortunately many programs do not remove those associations made when they are uninstalled. This is a bad programming practice. In some cases programs are deleted by users and are not removed via their uninstallers. The registry keys for the file associations become orphan and when user double clicks a file type whose association is invalid windows come up with an error.
Such errors are very annoying especially when you are busy doing some important work on your PC and for this reason registry cleaners track and remove such invalid file associations.
You also need to know that there is a difference between unused file extension entries in registry and invalid file associations. Most of the registry cleaners display unused file extensions and claim to fix your PC for invalid file associations.
