What Is Considered High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure otherwise known as hypertension is when the force your blood exerts on the walls of your arteries and veins reaches a point that is considered dangerous. Blood flow becomes more strenuous and this can affect a range of organs in your body. The heart is the most vulnerable organ to hypertension and can lead to a number of aortic malfunctions and fatal problems. Hypertension is measured by systolic and diastolic pressures. Systolic measures pressure from the contraction of heart chambers while diastolic measures pressure from the relaxation of heart chambers. Thus both measurements have to be under a certain level to be considered safe. The two levels are;

-Systolic Blood Pressure must be consistently below 140 mm hg. Although under exercise or strenuous activity this can fluctuate but over a long period of time below 140 is not considered hypertension.

-Diastolic Blood Pressure must be consistently below 90 mm hg. However the same rules apply to diastolic pressure, if the body undergoes heavy exercise and it rises above 90 it does not necessarily mean that the patient has hypertension.

A normal healthy Blood Pressure Level should be 120/80 or below. So to the question; “What is Considered High Blood Pressure”, the answer is simply 140/90 and above. However results vary from person to person, variable factors such as metabolism and other aspects do come into play. It is up to the doctor to determine the proper classification of the patient and whether they are “at risk” or are in a healthy and safe zone.
