What Is High Definition?

High definition television is the highest-resolution broadcast format available. It is a digital medium and requires a high definition capable television to view. High definition broadcasts are carried on digital signals but not all digital signals are transmitting high definition broadcasts.

High definition offers much greater picture clarity than standard resolution formats. The picture is noticeably clearer. Most electronic stores have high definition televisions set up so one can see this for one's self. The image also displays in a wide screen format, which is preferable for watching films. Standard broadcast format is more square than rectangular, hence the "This film has been formatted to fit your screen" caveat that accompanied the broadcast of movies on television in the past.

High definition is a digital format. This means that the picture is created with pixels, small colored squares that, when viewed from a distance, create a complete picture in the same fashion as does a pointillist painting. The higher the resolution, the smaller the pixels and, thus, the more pixels used in the creation of the image. As the technology advances, the number of pixels used increases. Currently, the highest resolution available is 1080p.

High definition screens are plasma or LCD based. Plasma screens use a super-heated gas to display their image on the screen and LCD screens make use of a liquid crystal matrix. Plasma screens are typically characterized by denser blacks, a more true-to-life color palate and for presenting the best image when the screen is viewed straight on. LCD screens are known for brilliant colors, longevity and for being easier to view from an angle. The choice is usually a matter of user preference as both offer excellent image resolution and longevity.

High definition broadcasts are usually denoted by the letters "HD" in a box logo on the corner of the screen at the beginning of the broadcast. HD broadcasts are very popular for cinema and for sports where the resolution, in the former case, more accurately reproduces the image as it appeared on film and, in the latter case, because high definition allows more of the action during a sporting event to be easily seen by the viewer. Nature programs, travel programs and programs dealing with the arts are also commonly broadcast in HD. In the future, HD is likely to become the standard format, much as color broadcasts superseded black and white.

Where the amount of HD broadcasting is concerned, satellite companies offer the most high definition broadcasts. Because satellite is an inherently digital format, the companies have been able to offer HD programming to every subscription level. Digital cable is generally a service level, and price range, above standard cable. Network television does broadcast some HD content, but generally only their most popular programs. The broadest selection of sports and films broadcast in HD, however, is to be found on satellite.

High definition television sets have been rapidly dropping in price as the format is more broadly adopted by broadcasters.
