But if those umbrella genres were so difficult to understand, there’s no telling what music fans will make of micro-genre horror rap and its most prominent group, Detroit’s Insane Clown Posse. A genre of hip hop focusing on horrifying imagery and other dark content, horror rap will never be heard on mainstream radio. It has, however, forced people to ask “What is ICP?”

So just what is ICP?

Insane Clown Posse is comprised of two people – Joseph “Violent J” Bruce and Joseph “Shaggy 2 Dope” Utsler. Both grew up in rough neighborhoods in Detroit, a lifestyle that would provide much of the lyrical and mythical content for their group’s future songs and Dark Carnival myth series.

Insane Clown Posse creates horror rap. Horror rap is not for the faint of heart, and has frequently been controversial as its content is considered wildly inappropriate by many. Ah, the Juggalos. If one thing regarding the Insane Clown Posse can be said for sure, it’s that their Juggalo fan base is one of a kind. No other artist, mainstream or not, has anywhere near the cult fan base that ICP does with their Juggalos. We can be certain that no Juggalos are asking, “What is ICP?”

Juggalos dress up and paint their faces like Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, Juggalos have their own slang language, Juggalos connect with one another at the annual Gathering of the Juggalos festival and in Juggalo chat rooms, and most importantly, Juggalos consider one another family.

What is ICP’s discography like?

ICP has been putting out horror rap records since the early 90s, since their now legendary horror rap album Carnival of Carnage debuted in 1992. Since then, the group has put out 10 more horror rap albums, each coming attached with a moral lesson via one of the group’s Joker’s cards. There next horror rap album, The Mighty Death Pop!, is scheduled to be released in early 2012.

What is ICP’s mythology series all about?

Called the Dark Carnival, ICP’s mythological series is directly connected to their albums. While multi-faceted, the general theme is one of judgment and the afterlife. Juggalos from all over the world have become engrosses in each chapter, or Joker’s card, of the Dark Carnival series, and highly anticipate the meaning of each Joker’s card release along with the release of its related album.

This mythology is not common amongst other horror rap artists, it is strictly unique to Juggalos and ICP.
