What Is Territorial Dog Aggression & Why Does It Make A Dogs So Angry?
However, since our pets are disciplined then there is a certain level of tranquillity that we should expect from them. The most common aggression behavioral problem that dogs display is called "territorial aggression". To sum up the definition of territorial aggression, it simply describes a dog that goes absolutely crazy whenever a stranger approaches their home. What is it that makes a dog this aggressive? Defending ones territory is ofcourse a completely normal behavior for a dog. There are however some scenarios that may increase your dog's aggressive behavior: 1. Aggression is often raised, for example, when a delivery boy comes over to leave a package and then leaves shortly thereafter. Your dog actually thinks that he drove the stranger away and this in itself creates more aggression. 2. Dogs with territorial aggression often barks excessively at anyting they can find, when they are in a moving car. When a dog is barking to other cars or people he is basically saying "Back off, this is my space!", and since nobody will appoach a moving car he will actually think that he is winning. He will then celebrate his victory by barking even more. 3. Yelling at a dog that is barking is also not a good way to respond. Many owners do not know that as they are yelling at their dog, they are actually encouraging the aggressive behavior. He will actually believe that you are supporting his aggressive behavior towards his "assailant". 4. The last thing that may increase his territorial aggression is when someone locks him up and isolates him from the crowd, for example when you have visitors in your home. Isolating your dog as he is barking at your guests may not seem like a bad idea at first. What will happen though, is that he will be able to smell the "intruders", but he will be unable to do anything about it, this will ofcourse be very frustrating for him and will sureley increase his aggression problems. The level of territorial aggression may vary from breed to breed. Certain breeds, such as the Tibetan Mastif, can actully be territorial to a degree where it is adviceable to change your walking route every time you take your dog for a walk. Keep in mind though that regardless of your dogs breed your dog can suffer from territorial aggression, most often it is caused by isolation and improper socialization. The best way to prevent territorial aggression is to make an effort to keep your dog socially active. Make an effort to stimulate your dog by varying your walking routes that you have and also try to make sure that he meets other people and pets on a regular basis.
