The technique of shortening is catching on. It is now a wide practice to shorten any website which has a cumbersomely long address to a shorter address by the 3W service on the internet. Many reasons are found to relate to the need to shorten website address to a small number of character were the characters of a website are as big as 43 characters etc.

Some good reasons are to avoid garbling where descriptive features are added on to the website addresses. These denote data hierarchies, session information, command structures and other information. It makes the URL to give aesthetic displeasures and also creates difficulty in remembering an address. So using a short URL in email message prevents them from becoming garbled and split.

The short URL also uses less space online and can therefore be conveniently used for instant messaging. So you can fit the short URL within a certain range of numbers of characters that are involved for a website URL. A good idea is to use Unicode characters to shorten up an URL for special messaging services more commonly used.

Another advantage is the benefit of reading aloud. This can be achieved by any shortener service. But, a service that allows the user to select URL is more popular.

URL shortening being a specialized service for redirecting the user to a site is being used for the sake of committing pranks, frauds and spamming mail. The visiting users get manipulated to unwanted websites and then get exposed wherein without being aware they become victims of hacking frauds. Therefore some sites like Google for example have made the shortening process secure with safe browsing techniques.

Although the URL schemes are usually supported like for example the HTTP, FTP, POP, LDAP, POP etc. there are however unsupported schemes too like java etc. that are unsupported. Several techniques based on character identity are available to implement it. Base36, Base62, inclusive of a hash (#) function, user customizable techniques and so on.

As originl URLs are unavailable it is difficult for security features to impose restrictions on insecure sortened addresses of websites. The spam filters do not function effectively to hold an URL as a valid one for redirecting the user. So clicking on the short URL inadvertently redirects the user automatically. Whether this is to a valid site or a spam site cannot be previewed or detected before clicking the URL. However, when the service receives complaints of spamming sites, it effectively disables these. Blacklisting of such sites is also being carried out but the frequency of spam sites operations is one too many to handle.

This results to a compromise of the shortening services where one can open up their directory structure and leaves it unsafe from hacking and composing shortened URLs to be redirected to phishing sites. There are also privacy problems where these services can actually access the user`s trait of operations over many domains and interfere with their privacy. Some URLs shortening services are vigorously active with messaging a function on the URL to attract the user`s attention to look at the URL before clicking it. These security issues have been coming up since shortening services commenced and urgently need to be solved.
