What Is Meditation?

,,Meditate on something"means - to many of us - just thinking about something specific - such as thinking about solving a problem. So how it is – one thinks about something or not?

Meditation techniques aim at achieving a certain state (of the soul – of the mind – of the body) in which man is conscious but ... he doesn't think! Nowadays we think all the time! Speaking, writing, listening - we always think. Most of our „thinking" is a kind of internal dialogue between ....
Do not think – could something be simpler?!

It would seem that „not-thinking” is the simplest thing in the world. Just sit down and... the problems begin! How long can we stay alone? With nobody? Without speaking, listening, reading? We can stay alone very shortly! Most people, who would be locked up in isolated, soundproof rooms, would be quickly go mad! They wouldn't stand themselves. Why is the solitary confinement cell the most severe punishment for convicts? What is the punishment – they just sit and do nothing - "almost" holiday.

It is worth to carry out such experiment on ourselves: sit down in the place - where no one will disturb us, where we will not hear the radio, television, etc. and try to hold out without speaking for two hours. The film in the cinema last so long and we are able to sit in the cinema for two hours with almost no movement, so it should not be any problem for us to carry out such experiment. But for most people this experiment won't be as simple as watching a movie in the cinema.
