What Is The Meaning Of Sales

One of my responsibilities at work is to train new salespeople. Every now and then we have someone new joining our department, usually a sales freshman. One of the first things I asked them during their first day of training is what is the meaning of sales. Unfortunately, not many of them can give a satisfactory answer to that question.

I believe that every salesperson in the world wants to find out one thing. What is the easiest, fastest and the least time-consuming way to make a sale. It is becoming a priority for many to discover how to make sales with as little effort as possible. However in their attempts to simplify the sales process and find ways to overcome sales problems fast they forget about the most crucial aspect of sales. The meaning of sales.

What is the meaning of sales?
By definition sale is simply an act of selling. A process in which goods are being transferred from the buyer to the seller. However as I am not a fan of definitions I will leave this misleading one on the side. Too many salespeople selling is a process where you identify people with particular problems that you can solve. Once you know that you simply try to help them. You do that by offering them tools, solutions or your experience that they can avail of. And to me this is the real meaning of sales.

Sales is not about the salesman technique, skills or achievements. It is not about sales quotas and bragging about the last sales you have made. It is about honestly believing that what you sell benefits your users and can help them solve their problems.

In other words, the REAL meaning of sales is working hard to help your prospects and clients.

How to sell fast?
If you really want to find the fastest, easiest, least time-consuming way to make sales you have to start with your approach to it. If you go into a sale with the intention to increase your revenue, strengthen your position on the market or whatever else that it might be I can guarantee you you will fail. Is on the other hand you go to your sales call with the intention to help the prospect, or even better with some ideas on how you could help the prospect that I can guarantee you you will make sales fast.
