What's Blu-ray Anyway?
Here's a bit about what sets Blu-ray above the old DVD formats. Blu-ray is sometimes now known as BD and is an optical disk format that's rapidly replacing the original DVD format. The BD format gives over 5 times the storage facility of a normal DVD and has up to 25GB of capacity on one single layer disc ; double that on a twin layer disk. The name Blu-ray came from the first technology, that uses a blue / violet laser ray for reading and writing info, thus Blu-ray Disk. The "e" was left out of blue so the name could be trademarked. This format was developed by a bunch of almost 200 of the world's leading electronics, PC and media manufacturers. The formats below are part of the Blu-ray Disc specs : BD-ROM which is a read-only format used with HD pictures, games and software. BD-R the R equals recordable, and is for HD recordings and computer information storage. BD-RE the RE equals re-writable and is a recyclable format for high definition video recording and info storage. By adding more 25G layers to the discs, soon the Blu-ray Disc format will be simply extendable and will increase to 100GB-200GB etc at 25GB per layer this technology will be coming at you very soon. Think, if you can get Nine hours of high-definition video on one twin layer disk, when the 200GB discs come out that'll be 36 hours of HD video on one disk! That sure cuts back on storage. Blu-ray Disk specs say that 1x speed is 36Mbps standard. BD-ROM flicks will need 54Mbps information transfer rate, so minimum speed must be 2x, i.e. 172Mbps. As the technology rapidly moves on Blu-ray will have the capability for much bigger speeds, so Blu-ray will need less recording power and lower disc revolution speed than an ordinary DVD and HD-DVDs to attain the same data transference rate. The BDA has plans to raise the rate to 8x or 288Mbps or even higher pretty soon. With the development of the most recent inexpensive, hard coating technology protective cartridges are now becoming outdated. Blu-ray will shortly start using the most recent hard-coatings which will make discs much more proof against scratches and fingerprints than the DVDs we handle now, but they will look and feel the same. Blu-ray discs will essentially stay the same though; you will be able to play them independently of an internet connection, only wanting that as now, for downloading extras. It also will be wanted to authorize copying of Blu-ray films that you are going to be in a position to transfer over a home PC network. The Blu-ray Disc Association ( BDA ) has announced the overall cost of producing BD Disc media costs the same as making a DVD. There are added costs of manufacture but as production volumes rise the production costs will fall and the price will be akin to DVDs.
