What Three Things Should I Grow In My Greenhouse?
Most greenhouse gardeners choose to grow tomatoes and these are a great greenhouse crop, but they do need a bit more attention and they can be prone to pest and disease problems, however most greenhouse gardeners will agree that they are well worth the effort. What’s more the flavour and aroma of a just picked tomato is beyond compare and once you have tasted your own homegrown tomatoes you won’t hesitate to grow them again and again and again. If you are new to greenhouse gardening then buy some ready grown greenhouse tomato varieties from the garden centre but choose something a bit different, avoid standard varieties such as Shirley and choose plum tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and anything with a bit of character. Look out for heritage varieties, or choose something that you have tasted and liked. Don’t restrict yourself to three things in your greenhouse, although that may make sense to build your confidence, you can grow lots of different things throughout the season. A greenhouse is a brilliant place to grow salads and herbs and to be honest you can never have enough of these. Pots of mixed salad leaves can be harvested five or six times or more each, each one providing the equivalent of several bags of supermarket salad at a fraction of the price and a dozen times fresher, tastier and healthier. If you avoid the use of pesticides (which you should) and you choose to use natural fertilisers and organic compost then the value of your crop multiplies enormously. A savvy greenhouse gardener can be eating greenhouse salads pretty much all year round with maybe a bit of a dearth in the deepest winter. Use your greenhouse to get all your seeds started and potted up and then as soon as the last frost has passed, harden them off in the cold frame and plant them out. You may not grow many plants in the greenhouse all summer, but choose to leave the hot house plants that hail from sunny climes inside the warm, protection of the greenhouse, but be sure to water them properly, feed them generously and harvest them as soon as they are cropping to keep a continuity of harvest and production.
