What To Consider When Buying Your First Child Car Seat

Getting a child car seat is one of the most important purchases to make before your baby is born. If you think about it, after mum has given birth and both mother and baby are able to return home, you need a suitable child car seat to ensure your newborn is in safe hands when driving home. It is common for the hospital to check that you have this before you leave, so make sure you get one.

Whilst they might be quite expensive, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth. If you’re in the process of getting one before mum is suddenly rushed into hospital to give birth, then ask a friend or family member if you can borrow one of theirs in the interim - with second hand car seats, ensure that you know its history though and always check the recommended age.

Child Car Seat Categories

When you purchase a child car seat, first things first, you need to choose the right one, based on your child’s weight and age group. These are put into categories or groups; you may have heard people refer to a car seat by group or stages, well this is to make the whole purchasing process a lot easier. Below is a guide to the various groups or stages and their respective weights and age groups.

• Group 0 (Stage 1) Newborn to 9 months Birth to 10kg (22lbs)
• Group 0+ (Stage 1) Newborn/ 5 months to 18 months Birth to 13kg (29lbs)
• Group 1 (Stage 2) 9 Months to 4 years 9kg (20 lbs) to 18 kg (40lbs)
• Group 2 (Stage 3) Up to 6 years 15kg (33lbs) to 25kg (55lbs)
• Group 3 (Stage 4) Up to 12 years 22kg (48lbs) to 36kg (79lbs)

Your First Child Car Seat

When it comes to your first child car seat, you will be looking at stage 1, so that’s both group 0 and group 0+. These car seats are known as infant carriers and are rear-facing seats when positioned in the car.

The reason they are rear facing is for your child’s safety. As they won’t be able to support their heads until a couple of months further on, facing the rear will give their head, neck and back vital support. If they were to sit in a forward facing seat, they would not be able to have the correct support for their heads.

These infant carriers come with a handle to make it easy to carry when moving in and out of the car. These are usually fitted with small pillows to keep their heads still in position to prevent wobbling when the car is in motion. After several months, when your baby can keep their head up on their own, you can remove these pillows.

Final Considerations

As your child develops, they will naturally need car seats to suit their needs. You can find some that double as a rear car seat and a forward one, for you to use as you child moves up the groups or stages. There are also a number of all-in-one travel systems which can help keep the cost of travelling around with your baby down. All-in-one travel systems, as the name suggests, have multiple uses. Not only do they act as a pram or push chair, but you can also remove sections which work as car seats or carriers.

Price is certainly an issue nowadays, what with many parents and families feeling the financial pinch. However there are multiple retailers online that supply safe child car seats at affordable prices. You can’t put a price on your child’s safety, so it’s important that buy your first child car seat as soon as you can.
