What To Look For When Buying Saddles
High quality leather is more expensive but offers a longer life. The leather should be supple and smooth, not spongy. Bending the side jockeys, skirt, and fenders will reveal any cracking. This could indicate that the leather is overly dry or has dry rot. The hair follicles should be located close to each other and no wrinkles should be present. Edges should be nicely finished, not rough or sharp. The construction of the tree provides support and if the tree breaks, the saddle is basically useless. To check the tree, grasp the cantle with one hand and the pommel with another, then pull the cantle in the direction of the fork. If this pressure causes the tree to flex, look for another saddle. If not, hold the cantle with one hand, forcing the pommel toward you with the other hand to ensure there is no movement. A tree made from wood covered with rawhide is stronger and more durable than one made from molded plastic. A wood tree with a fiberglass coating is both strong and waterproof. The bars of the tree should not move because this could indicate that the cantle or pommel is broken. The stitching and buckles should also be inspected for wear and tear. Stitching should not be worn through and the leather in the rigging should be supple and soft. Select a saddle with stainless steel or brass hardware that is solid or chrome-plated. To test the seat size, put the saddle into a saddle stand equipped with a good pad. The front should not sit too low or high and the seat should be comfortable, allowing you to keep hips under heels. The upper body should not tip forward or backward and standing in the stirrups should not cause you to fall in either direction. The fenders should be the proper length and the stirrups should feature a wide, flat bottom. Stirrup leather should be long enough and if it is too long, new holes can be punched to shorten it. Some retailers permit riders to try their saddles before buying so take advantage of this option when available.
