What To Look For In An Orthopaedic Bed

A shockingly high number of people suffer from lower back pain, in the UK it is close to 8 in 10 people and many of these are not people who have serious back or joint problems or diseases. In fact a large number of these people suffer from what is known as ‘non-specific back pain’ this doesn’t tend to have a definitive cure, although painkillers and activity can help ease it. One of the situations that many people with this kind of pain struggle with is sleeping.

Beds have typically been not very friendly towards those with back pain; cheaper mattresses tend not to have much support and can be quite hard or unresponsive to your body shape. Our back is not meant to lie on a rigid flat surface as the natural curve of our spine is upset by areas of our body that can elevate part such as the shoulders, head and hips.

Luckily there are mattresses and entire beds that are made to help those with back pain get a good night’s sleep. These beds are known as ‘Orthopaedic beds’ and can come in a wide range of types. Orthopaedic beds need to have a level of support and flexibility, this means you need a mattress that is not too soft but also not too hard. Memory foam mattresses have become quite popular in recent years as they adapt to the body’s shape and position to support it comfortably.

Some people may find that a motorised bed that can be shaped to different sleeping positions can give them the comfort they desire but can be quite expensive, this tends to be the last resort option for those with chronic conditions.

One aspect not many adults consider is the amount of moving space, it is believed that the size of a typical double bed is not suitable for two adults and that a king or queen sized bed is preferred to allow room to move which we do involuntarily in our sleep.

Some people will suffer with a poor mattress for years without acting on their discomfort, or go out and buy what they think will help their condition. The best practice should be to see your doctor or a physiotherapist about your problem first, as many of the orthopaedic solutions are expensive it is important you get advice and any possible recommendations before you spend your money.
