This may surprise you but your skin is actually the largest organ in your body! It forms 8% of our total body mass and acts as a protective barrier against bacterial infections, pollution, and the sun.
In the past, people were unaware of the damaging effect of the sun on our skin. The UV index has increased with the decrease in our ozone layer and it rises on sunny days. Due to the damage unknowingly done years ago, there’s been an increase in skin cancers of 60% over just the past 10 years alone. In 2001 more than 70,000 Canadians were diagnosed with skin cancer. It’s estimated that 60-70% of these cases could have been prevented with healthier life-styles and proper protection from the harmful rays of the sun.
There are three main types of skin cancer. Basal and squamous cell are the most common and with care and proper treatment they are curable. Melanoma is the type of skin cancer that people fear because although it can be cured in its early stage, as it progresses it becomes deadly.
Fair skinned and light colored eye people are at higher risk of developing skin cancer. It is imperative to have regular check ups by your family doctor.
Most often skin cancers occur on the head, neck and torso. Initially the lesions may feel like small, scaly patches that repeatedly build up and then fall off. Other things to watch for are lesions that increase in size, are multicolored, have irregular borders, or bleed. See your doctor right away if you have any of these.
Prevention is the key to avoiding potential skin cancers. Stay out of the sun in peak hours, wear a hat and use sunscreen every day of the year. Make sure that your children are protected at all times and use sunscreen on them suitable for children.
Another important factor in the prevention of cancers, both skin and internal organs, one that most often people don’t consider is that we absorb toxins through our skin, environmental pollutants as well as chemical pollutants that are in most cosmetic products, including hair, skin and body products. It’s important to use products that contain no cancer causing ingredients, no chemicals and no parabens.
