What Will The New Year Mean To You?
As we enter a new year, a new decade, what will the New Year entail for you; a fresh start with new positive habits, or a New Year with old habits? The choice is yours, but wouldn't it be wonderful if you set some new year's resolutions and followed through with them. Just think about that for a moment....imagine or visualise achieving that goal, how good do you feel? Perhaps your fresh start involves becoming a non-smoker, or a new, slimmer, healthier and fitter you, or maybe you want to actually save some money for a holiday you have always longed for, the list is endless. For some people, the New Year resolutions are simply just a new start on old habits. Perhaps you make a promise this year will be different, you think about what you want to achieve but before you know it the old habits are creeping back in. When setting goals it's important to plan your goals and be positive about them. Plan to fail, fail to plan. Ensure your goals are realistic, if it is a big goal, separate into smaller steps and goals. If the word “goal” puts you off as it may represent failings in the past when they didn’t meet your goals change it into a more positive word such as “achievement list” or “my plan for the future”. Write down your goals and what you want to achieve, some people find it easy to write a list but also find the list is easily forgotten. Do not throw your goal list into a cupboard somewhere , place it somewhere in easy view such as put it up on your fridge, leave a copy in your bag, even pin a copy up on the toilet door! Often we see new years resolutions as a concept of doing, we must stop smoking lose weight, exercise more, cut down on chocolate or wine and so on. However also include some “me” goals such as being more compassionate and kind with yourself, if you have a family and responsibilities which doesn’t allow you much time “me” time, a goal could perhaps be spending five minutes each day in a quite room with just your thoughts and reconnecting with yourself. Set aside a time each week to review your list, to check in and see where you are. See the list as work in progress as perhaps new items need to be added. When you have achieved a goal, no matter how small recognise this and give yourself a pat on the back. Some goals may seem too big to work through on your own, make sure you recognise this and rally up support from family, friends or other resources if you find it difficult such as a Hypnotherapist or other suitable professionals for stop smoking or weight management. Get the pen to paper and start thinking how you will live your life differently next year!
