What You Need To Know About The Iphone 3g

After the iPhone 3G was released, a lot of people have been throwing out pressing questions related to Apple-released next generation phone. Here are some of them:

1. What does 3G mean?

If you are familiar with the naming conventions of iPod, the term 3G in the iPhone 3G might make you think that Apple is indeed releasing iPhone’s third generation. Well, 3G in the name only means “third-generation mobile technology”. This wide-area wireless phone technology actually allows a faster data transmission compared to the EDGE network being used by AT&T for the iPhone now.

2. How much faster is the iPhone 3G than the iPhone?

According to AT&T, the iPhone 3G has a typical download speed of 1.4Mbps versus the average data between 75Kbps and 135Kbps on the EDGE Network. During the keynote from Steve Job, it took around 21 seconds to actually load a graphics-filled Web page using the 3G while EDGE took around 59 seconds. Likewise, it took around 5 seconds to upload an email attachment compared to EDGE’s 18 seconds.

However, Glenn Fleishman, Macworld contributor, pointed out that the browser and email attachment loading times are not the most revealing and important exercise. The most notable thing to know about iPhone 3G is that its data transfer speed is a lot faster than the usual iPhone veterans have been used to.

3. Is it possible to use iPhone 3G anywhere?

Unfortunately, the 3G network used by AT&T only covers major metropolitan areas and the iPhone 3G’s 3G service may only be used in 280 metropolitan areas in the U.S. If you are located in an area without or with low 3G coverage, your iPhone 3G will gets its data from the slower EDGE network instead, which compared to the 3G service, has a wider availability.

4. What should I expect from iPhone 3G?

The iPhone 3G has another feature that appears to be quite a built-in and handy one. Thanks to the 3G connectivity that allows users to have phone conversations while simultaneously surfing the phone on its mobile network – for instance, it is possible to get the location of a restaurant without the need to hang up on your partner whenever you are trying to decide where to eat for dinner. With the original iPhone’s 2G connectivity, it is possible to talk on the phone through EDGE and surf the Net through Wi-Fi, but it is impossible to do both simultaneously.

4. What are the physical differences between the current iPhone model and the iPhone 3G?

There are a few differences. The iPhone 3G has now a plastic back, white on the iPhone 3G model and black on the 8Gb model. In addition, the volume buttons found on the left side of the new iPhone are now made of silvery metal.

The headphone port of the new device is now flushed with the main body of the phone, not like the recessed jack on the previous version. This only means that if you like a particular pair of headphones, you don’t need to use a headphone adapter anymore just to make them work with the iPhone 3G.

Another difference is that the iPhone 3G’s handset edges are thinner and are more curved compared to the previous version. This helps hide the little thicker middle part of the iPhone 3G. In addition, the new iPhone 3G is a little lighter than the previous model.

There you go – some of the questions iPhone fanatics have been throwing to the new iPhone 3G. If you have some more, then why don’t you just buy one and find out the answers to your questions yourself?
