What You Should Know Before Hiring A Fundraising Consultant

An organization planning to host a fundraising event to raise money for its causes can hire a fundraising consultant especially if the group does not have experience in organizing a fundraiser. Hiring the right fundraising consultant will make it easier for the group to organize the fundraiser as well as make it possible for the group to have a well-attended and successful event. However, before hiring a consultant to facilitate the planning of a fundraiser, an organization should first know what a fundraising consultant can and cannot do for the organization and its fundraiser.

A fundraising consultant can be very helpful to an organization because he has the skills and the knowledge when it comes to fundraising. A fundraising consultant can also motivate and train people in fundraising. He can create and evaluate a workable fundraising plan, help the organization’s members in understanding the plan and their responsibilities, and help in finding and hiring a good fundraising staff.

A hired consultant can research potential donors and write proposals for the organization if necessary. He can also keep track of donor information by setting up a database. If an organization requires him to carry out direct mail campaigns and conduct feasibility studies, then he can do so. Because the group hired a fundraising consultant with skills and knowledge about the ins and outs of fundraising, then the group can defer to him if he recommends structural changes in the organization to improve fundraising efficiency.

However helpful a fundraising consultant is to an organization, the group should make sure that the consultant does not personally solicit money from individuals unless they are with someone from the organization. The consultant the group hires should not use his personal contacts to raise funds. If he offers to do everything involved in fundraising, the group should find another consultant because delegating all tasks to the consultant will mean that the organization’s members and volunteers will not be involved in the fundraising at all.

Hiring a fundraising consultant is an especially good idea for large organizations planning to hold a fundraiser that will require a lot of work and effort from its members and volunteers. The consultant will make it easier for the group to organize the event. However, smaller groups should consider organizing the fundraising event on their own because hiring a fundraising consultant might not be cost-effective.
