When Exercising Worsens Eczema

Many people have sensitive and dry skin because the protective hydrolipid layer of their skin (the thin layer on top of the skin) is damaged. The reasons are various: advanced age, genetics, too much sun exposure or allergic reactions to some substances.
Weaker skin has less defensive elements and is more likely to be affected by additional stress factors such as temperature variations, synthetic clothing or aggressive cosmetic products.
In combination, many of those factors can cause various negative different skin irritations such as neurodermatitis, psoriasis, allergic rashes, blisters, rosacea and eczema.
Eczema (or dermatitis) characterized by scaly, dry, red spots are very common. About 10-20% of the world population suffers from eczemas on body and/or on the face. Sometimes they are very itchy and painful. Some persons, especially youngsters, who report the pain is can be extreme and urge to scratch become unbearable. Eczema dries out the skin even more than it already was. The skin becomes scaly and in the worst case it could cause bubbles filled with pus, which can open up and ooze. This leads to constant inflammation of the skin which can damage it permanently.
Eczema and Sports
People with the tendency to develop eczema say to suffer more when doing sports. This occurs especially when the weather is hot and the air humidity high. This exacerbation is caused by the affectability of the skin to hot temperatures and high humidity which is caused by sweating.
Sweat is a natural salty body liquid and helps it to cool down the body temperature when it gets too high. For people who easily develop eczemas the salty body liquid dries out the skin even more and makes the irritation worse. So sports affect the sensitive skin negatively. The following factors can cause further irritation:
- Synthetic soccer jerseys.
- Hot showers after doing sports.
- Taking showers using chemical cosmetic shampoos.
- Swimming in pools full of chlorine, which irritates the skin.
- Bacterias or other microorganisms found in the environment causing infection of the damaged skin.
- Bad skin care habits, such as excessive showering or quite the contrary poor body hygiene or drying the body too hard with rough materials.
The problem can be resolved with different means:
1. Work out less. Be sure to also reduce your dietary intake if you decide to take this option.
2. Do physical activity, like yoga or pilates, that are not prone to produce too much sweat.
3. Exercise in well ventilated areas with low humidity.
4. Apply only lotions on a completely biological basis. This type of product will impede further irritation.
For optimal skin benefit you should only apply natural products. They will not dehydrate the skin, but give it back its natural vitality on the long runs and you'll not have to reduce your exercise. Whereas cosmetic products worsen the skin irritation natural products will mildly take care of all the skin's needs and help it to recover its strength to fight the eczema and produce new, healthy skin tissues.
