When To Plan Your Perfect Holiday In Brazil

When you're planning a holiday in a country as big as Brazil - and believe me, it's big! - it can be difficult to get your head around the sheer size and diversity of this amazing country. If you're more used to thinking of distances in a country like the UK, the transition to the continental scale of Brazil takes a bit of getting used to. Nowhere is this more apparent then where the weather is concerned...

Again, in the UK we're used to talking about that famously rainy Manchester weather and, to be fair, it does rain more on Britain's west coast than the east, but Manchester is only about 100 miles from the east coast, so think how the weather in Brazil can change from one end to the other when we're looking at the 2700 miles from the northern tip of Brazil to the border with Argentina in the south!

Don't despair, though! It's not quite as complicated as it might sound, so if you're looking to plan that perfect holiday in Brazil and you want to know when will be the absolute best time for your holiday, just have a look at the following guide, handily arranged city by city...

Rio de Janeiro

High season in Rio is from December-March and you can expect prices to reflect this. However, this is also the time when Rio experiences its hottest weather and for a city that is so famous for its beaches, it is arguably worth the extra costs. Of course it's also the case that one of the main reasons that many will visit this famous city, Rio Carnival, takes place during the month of February.

If you are not too bothered about the beach then you might think about taking your holiday in Brazil during the low season of May-October to avoid some of the price hikes and the crowds that the high season produces. The temperature during Brazil's winter rarely falls below 20°C, perhaps not beach weather but you can still certainly wander the streets in comfort.

Salvador de Bahia

The factor that may really lead to determining whether to include the city of Salvador on your Brazil holiday is the rainy season. Being in the north of Brazil, the temperature fluctuations between winter and summer are not as marked as further south and temperatures usually range between 25°C and 33°C all year round. It is the rain, which comes in April in Salvador da Bahia and lasts for around three months, which can put people off. It serves to dissuade people from visiting the beach and can put a dampener on the usually daily music and festivities that this region is famed for. However, that being said, showers are not like those experienced in the rainforest and do not usually last long enough to truly spoil your travels.

Iguazu Falls

The best time to visit the Iguazu falls really comes down to personal preference. January and February can seem like good times to visit Iguazu: it's Brazil's summer, the sky is blue and the volume of water coming over the falls at this time is high. But this is also the time when many Brazilians and Argentineans holiday here and it can get quite crowded, not to mention the fact that being the height of the summer, it is very hot and humid. Those wanting to avoid the crowds will also want to avoid visiting Iguazu Falls at Easter time as it is traditional for Brazilians and Argentineans to visit during this period and crowd levels reflect this. May and July are the rainy months and the volume of water coming over the Iguazu falls reflects this, this is when the falls are at their most impressive. However, this is perhaps not the time for a visit to Iguazu if you do not want to run the risk of getting a bit wet. Instead it is generally considered that for low crowd levels, an agreeable temperature and a low chance of getting rained on, that September and October are the best months to include Iguazu Falls in your holiday in Brazil.

Florianopolis

While the north of Brazil experiences something along the lines of a two-season climate (rainy or dry), the south, where Florianopolis is located, experiences a more pronounced four-season climate with a notable winter period. While the winter period (June to August) can get rather cold, with lows of 5°C, Florianopolis benefits from hot summers (December to March) when visitors can really make use of the excellent beaches in and around this city. We'd definitely recommend Florianopolis for any Brazil holiday itinerary, however, and there are other reasons why visitors may wish to visit outside of the period however, such as the famous Blumenau Oktoberfest!

The big advantage of the diversity of weather in Brazil is that no matter what time of year you are planning your holiday in Brazil, there will be plenty of Brazil where you can guarantee fine weather. So whether you're looking at a summer holiday in Brazil or a winter getaway - there'll be somewhere that's perfect for you!
