Where do babies come from? Inevitably, this question will be asked by your son or daughter and it can be flustering for the unprepared parent. Your answer to this and similar questions relating to sexual education is best shaped by your own style and a bit of sagely advice. It should also be tailored according to what YOU think is the best for your child and even that depends on having a feel for what your child is ready for. In my family, growing up was and still is a process of innocence and strictness. When I or my siblings asked the question about our or a baby’s origin we all originally got the same answer, “Their mothers”. This was actually a model approach. The answer was kept both short and truthful which is what you’re looking for with young children. Of course, your answer does not have to be as blunt, though I prefer it myself. Your child must be the guide that determines when you should give more information. It may not be necessary to go into the birds and the bees at the seemingly first opportunity. The hospital he or she was born in might be an appropriate answer and if the question “where in the hospital?” comes up then it may be proper to go further and say “their mothers.” Directly answering questions is appropriate for preschool aged children. Appropriate subjects to go over later in your child’s life would be how people develop with age, proper names, and feelings. As your child develops, you will not only want to begin giving more information. Make sure to begin using values in addition with facts when answering questions. Instill responsible thinking and precaution in your child. Your goal is to keep your child safe when he or she becomes sexually active. Describe the risks, responsibilities and your own personal values with regard to sexual behavior so your child will behave responsibly and later on have a healthy sexual life.
