Who Discovered The Proton

Proton is a nucleon which was discovered by Ernest Rutherford in the year 1918 when he noticed that after alpha particles were shot into nitrogen gas, scintillation detectors indicated hydrogen nuclei signatures. If you want to understand better the individual who discovered the proton you will definitely have to go back to the history of science. Ernest Rutherford came to resolve that the hydrogen could only have come from nitrogen and hence nitrogen consists of hydrogen nuclei. This man suggested further that the hydrogen nucleus which were known to contain atomic number 1 and were an elementary particle should be referred to as protons. And this is one of the main reasons that led to him being credited with proton discovery and later came to be called "father of nuclear physics".

This gentleman was also credited with various other scientific discoveries which included the radioactive transformation of atoms and also the atomic nucleus of alpha and beta radiation. In the year 1908, Ernest Rutherford was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry due to his theories that mainly touched on the radioactive transformation of atoms. This individual also discovered that the atoms and the nucleuses contained charges particles. He then started shooting alpha particles towards neon particles after he made the proton discovery and thereafter started creating the hydrogen element as he though that the basic particle could be among the building blocks of atoms and life.

In his experiment, every time an atom was transmitted with another it resulted in the emission of hydrogen nuclei. This made it clear that the atomic structure, hydrogen nucleus played an essential role. Ernest seemingly coined the terminology proton and this is despite other physicists who were working with him. Protons and neutrons are nucleons that are capable of being bound by nuclear force as well as converted to atomic nuclei. A proton which does not contain any neutron is generally a nucleus of a common hydrogen atom isotope. Ernest worked with several other physicists that included H. Geiger, Frederick Soddy and E. Marsden among others but it is only him that is mentioned when it comes to who discovered the protons.

Ernest had theories that were the basis of the proposed theory where atoms were composed of heavy nucleus that were made of neutrons and protons with electrons in orbit by Niels Bohr. Ernest was born in 1871 in New Zealand and it is there that he attained three degrees but left in 1895 because he couldn't find employment. He later went ahead to work in Cambridge university, McGill University as well as University of Manchester and he later became a professor and a director of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge in 1919.

In 1914, he was formerly knighted and in 1931 he was raised to the peerage. A knight is a non hereditary title that is given on the basis of personal merit or service to country. The rank of a knight is one less of a baronet. In 1933, four years before his demise he was named the president of the academic Assistance Council whose goal was to provide assistance to several Jewish scholars who were in one way or another affected by the Nazi persecution. He is still a respected man and many physicists agree that he made enormous contributions to science.
