Having just completed some amazing training with Jeffrey Combs in the back office of the Lead System Pro webinar library, I thought I would have some fun with the first time I came across personality types in the direct sales industry and it was via Blair Singer and his Sales Dogs book.
It is not only important to understand personality types in sponsoring new team members into your business it is also vital when it comes to being able to play to your new team members strengths early on in their business to help them get a fast start that they feel comfortable with.
I believe whole heartedly in the empowering leadership techniques as opposed to simply kicking butt which is a short term non productive approach often originating from the corporate world where it still exists.
The Sales Dogs personality types as described by Blair Singer are:-
1. The Pitbull is someone we all recognise the most aggressive and probably the most stereotyped salesperson of all. They will attack everyone as being a prospect and closing and objection handling is breakfast for this champion. They will often come across as too aggressive and will need a muzzle at a cocktail party.
2. The retriever is the second type of Sales Dog, usually everyones favourite, to the retriever customer service is everything, and they will chase and retrieve everything that is thrown at them with optimism and a huge grin on their face.
3. The third breed is the highly intelligent Poodle, they have flash with class and are the type of salespeople who view stylish presentation in everything they do to be normal. Where other sales dogs bark and whine the Poodle Salesdog is likely to offer refined wit, humour and wisdom.
4. The Fourth is the Chihuahua they are usually technical wizards. Their product knowledge and understanding of processes is astounding. Prospects can only be amazed and impressed with the incredible exhibition of passion, emotion and technical detail.
5. If you find droopy puppy dog eyes impossible to resist you are looking into the eyes of Sales Dog number five, The Basset Hound. Bassets are never ruffled, never stressed, they are consistent and dependable. Their tenacity is rivalled only by the Pit Bull but the manner in which they come across could not be more different.
6. Not an actual breed in reality, but a well known breed in the sales world, the Big Dog. Big Dog talks a big talk, walks a big walk and only does big deals, he eats prime steak or nothing. When they do win, get ready to hear about it morning, noon and night for days, weeks and even months to come.
It is worth getting your hands on a copy of the Sales Dogs book for your next team meeting and you will of course see that most of us are a blend of several of the breeds, but more often than not you will see that one personality trait is the dominant one above all others.
