The history of the electric guitar goes back to the 1930s and has ever since changed the way music is played and sounds.
The first electric guitar was made in the 1930s. At first, it was criticized. But it was before its time and the sound was too unique. As people began to realize that the electric guitar was more versatile and had a unique personality, it began to rise in popularity.
The rise of the electric guitar coincided with the increase in jazz orchestras. It was originally produced and designed by a collection of electronic aficionados, instrument producers and guitar manufacturers.
It all began when Les Paul, a guitar modernizer played around with guitars and microphones. The first acknowledged use of the electric guitar was during October 1932 in Wichita, Kansas when Gage Brewer, a guitarist and band leader, performed with it.
The two instruments that Brewer used were from George Beauchamp in Los Angeles. Brewer continued to advertise the guitars, writing an article about them in Wichita Beacon and using the at another performance in October. But it was not until another five years that the electric guitar was to be recorded for the very first time.
The first electric guitar recording was, contrary to popular belief not by Eddie Durham but it was in Chicago in 1938, by a jazz artist known as George Barnes. He recorded two songs, Sweetheart Land and It's a Low-Down Dirty Shame.
The first electric guitars produced for the public was by Electro String Instrument Corporation which was founded by George Beauchamp, Paul Barth and Adolph Rickenbacker in 1931
The guitars that this company was produced were affectionately called "Frying Pans". They were made from cast aluminum and were rested on a person's lap when played with a steel slide. They actually sounded quite modern according to today's guitarists who have been able to play vintage versions of the guitar.
Leo Fender was the first to produced a commercially successful guitar in 1946. He was radio repairman and the guitar was solid-bodied - much different from the hollow-bodied Jazz electric guitars. It was originally called "Esquire", and it quickly became a favorite of Country-Western guitar players.
