Who Needs An Alkaline Diet? You Do!
So what is the acid/alkaline pH balance, and how does it affect us? The acronym "pH" is short for "potential for hydrogen", or the amount of hydrogen ions in a particular substance. Hydrogen ions carry a positive charge (H+), and are acidic. Hydroxide ions carry a negative charge (OH-), and are alkaline. When acids and alkalines meet, they neutralize each other. For example, pure water (H2O), is completely neutral because its hydrogen (acid) and hydroxide (alkaline) ions cancel each other out. pH is measured on a scale from 0-14, showing a solution's level of acidity or alkalinity, based on its potential for attracting positive hydrogen ions. An acidic, hydrogen-dense solution would have less potential, or a lower score between 0-7. Solutions with pH scores of 7-14 have fewer hydrogen ions, and so they are alkaline. The lowest and highest numbers represent extremes on the spectrum: Battery acid has a pH of 0 and is corrosively acidic. Oven cleaner or pure lye has a pH of 14, which is dangerously alkaline. Correct pH is vital to every living thing - just ask any gardener, pool owner or aquarium owner. Improper balance can quickly cause illness or death to plants and animals. In the wrong pH environment, the most basic critical cell functions can not take place. The human body is no different.
