Why A Carbon Road Bike Is A Superior Bike

When you're looking to buy a new bike, the material it is made out of is an important consideration. It is what establishes a lot of the overall cost of the bike. You know you really want the lightest bike you can buy but you still need to be able to afford it. While a carbon road bike is the lightest around and it still is quite expensive but they aren’t as expensive as they used to be.

As with a lot of things a lot of what makes people think one material is better than another is very subjective. If you ask a group of cyclists what their preferences are you'll get just about as many responses as the number of people you ask.

The other thing is that a lot of how a bike feels under a rider is determined not by the actual material itself but by the way the manufacturer has used it to construct the frame. In other words by the thickness of the tubing and or how they are put together at the joints. The way they are molded and welding also plays a role in how the bike feels much more than the actual material. We are all different and so how we ride is different and the way we experience that ride is different. These are the reasons why when we talk about our bikes we have differing opinions.

The different manufacturers talk about their bikes as being better and claim superiority in one way or another especially when it comes to carbon fiber bikes. One part of me understands that they should and need to feel that way if they want to stay in the business. The other part of me says that there are quite a number of great carbon road bikes on the market. In my opinion they’ve all pretty much got the geometry of their bikes figured out and most of them ride very well. Therefore in actual fact there is not much that separates one from another these days at least when you are comparing similar quality and priced bikes.

Just about all quality manufacturers today utilize some carbon fiber in their bikes. Many of the entry level road bikes use aluminum frames but then use carbon fiber forks in order to capture some added ride comfort and performance that the carbon fiber gives you. This combination is really good for a beginner and/or intermediate cyclist because it keeps the price low yet gives greater performance.

But when it comes down to really making the best quality bikes, carbon fiber is looked at as a superior material. It gives you the winning combination of things that give the best balance in style, comfort and high performance. When used correctly it is much lighter than any other material at the same time it is much stronger. Even though using carbon fiber as a bike frame material is relatively new, it continues to be developed to be even better every day.

Hopefully you now have a little better idea about what a carbon road bike is and why there is such a debate about why they are a superior bike.
