Why A Recycling Program Is Important

Every day, Americans earn their wasteful reputation by creating hundreds of millions of pounds of trash. Much of this garbage consists of items that could have been broken down and reused. Things like light bulbs, batteries, computers and other office equipment can be torn apart by professionals and refurbished to create new items. This cuts down on the need to tap into more resources or to create more stuff, lessening the amount of new materials needed for new items. Other products can also be recycled, but many people have gotten lazy about saving them and taking the time to recycle them. Items such as glass, paper, aluminum, and plastic can all be taken and reused to create new things. There is no need to continually cut down trees or waste all of the plastic that we already have; with a well-planned out recycling program every household can have a simple and effective plan for reusing the waste that they create.

Protecting the environment by recycling is not something to consider, it is something that absolutely must be done by every person, every day. Now is the time to design and commit to a recycling program that will help you and your family to have specific guidelines of what can be recycled, where it should be placed in the home, and how to get it to a recycling center. Some cities offer free pick-up of recyclable items so that you do not have to do any of the heavy lifting. Other cities have services that you can pay for to make a weekly stop at your home and grab all of your waste that can be reused. There are also many recycling centers that hold events where you can bring your old light bulbs, batteries and electronics and drop them off. These companies can then use advanced machinery to carefully and safely break down these toxic items and refurbish them so that they can be used again. If your town does not have events like these, you can easily take your ewaste to the recycling center yourself and give them your old items to be processed properly.

Take the time to sit down with your family to develop a recycling program that works for everyone. Make sure to hold one another accountable and never throw away anything that can simply be reused. The Earth’s future is in our hands and it is vital that everyone contribute by properly disposing of all of their old electronics and regular trash.
