Why Acne Prone Skin Is Different

When I was a teen battling acne, my parents would get me one harsh acne wash after another. My mom, who has always had flawless, normal skin with very little sensitivity, was big on keeping her face really clean. She was, at the time, convinced that her great skin was the result of her cleaning methods. She used soap with an exfoliating facial sponge called a Buf Puf, a strong astringent, and then moisturized with Oil of Olay. Now, none of those things are bad for normal skin. And Oil of Olay does have a moisturizer that is made for sensitive skin. However, her cleaning methods were not healthy for my acne prone skin.

Your Acne is Not Your Fault
Unfortunately, it is a very common opinion that people with acne just aren't cleaning their face well enough. Many of my parent's friends, and my own friends, were always suggesting their own very harsh cleaning methods for me. And I tried them, with very negative results. The Internet was not as easy to navigate back then, and it was not full of as much information as it is now. It would have been difficult for me to find the truth about this even if I had tried.

Acne Prone Skin is Sensitive Skin
Maybe your skin is oily so you feel like you need to dry it up significantly. If you don't have any friends suffering from acne, you may be drawn to using their own methods. It is important to keep in mind that your skin is sensitive. Unfortunately, those areas with bumps all over them need to be considered when you describe your skin type. They are a part of your skin.

Would It Be Easier to Clear My Skin If It Wasn't Sensitive?
Contrary to what you may be thinking, acne is not difficult to treat just because of the fact you can not use harsh cleaning methods on it. Most treatments intended for acne don't actually tell you to scrub your face with something harsh. In fact, doing so is usually discouraged because it could severely irritate you.

Most effective treatments for acne are in the forms of topical ointments. Dermatologists most often recommend that the ointment be the only medicated thing you put on your face. Your cleanser should be mild and your method of washing should be as well, usually only involving gently rubbing the cleanser into your skin.
