Some people love romances or love military books, however fantasy is a much better genre. Not only do you get action, romance, and adventure, but you get everything that comes along with magic, knights, kings, and peasants. Also, in many fantasy novels you get magical creatures like elves or orcs. Reading fantasy is sure to keep you interested and entertained while reading the book.
Just like every other genre there are good series and bad ones. Try to stay away from new series or those that get bad reviews. As you should with any other book, always look at the reviews before buying a book. You’ll definitely want to read those New York Times best sellers such as the The Song of Ice and Fire series. You’ll find other series in this category as well such as The Wheel of Time series. If these are selling enough to be on the New York Times best seller list it means that these books have a very strong following and it is worth getting caught up in the series.
Unlike other genres, fantasy novels typically come in a series. A series of 3, 5, 7, or 12 are the most common number of books in a series. Sometimes authors will specifically try to break this mold however. You typically won’t see too many filler novels unless you are reading bad fantasy. Typically you’ll get 7 or so novels full of action packed adventure. If you get to a part that starts getting dry, just realize that they are likely setting up for a huge battle or some other form of massive conflict.
If you are going to start reading fantasy for the first time, I highly recommend picking up George R.R. Martin’s books. However, these novels are not for children. If you are looking for more novels that are equally as good but without the adult content, try Robert Jordan’s books or even better, the best 3 novels of all time, “The Lord of the Rings.”
