Camden Council, in London, recently announced that it was to attempt to tackle metal theft with the use of guard dogs patrols. The dogs would be used to detect intruders in areas that are susceptible to theft.

However, the use of security dogs isn’t just a one-off with many other police forces and security services making good use of the hounds’ assets. General purpose guard dogs have their senses sharply honed by a rigourous training process and therefore can be used for multiple purposes. Like in the case of metal thefts London, they can be used to sense intruders that humans would otherwise be unable to detect. Guard dogs security services even train a dog to attack targets without a command.

Much of a guard dogs security talent can be attributed to their powerful noses. A guard dog has a sense of smell 2000 times better than that of humans, making them great at sniffing out evidence of crime. Guard dogs are used in drug searches to find illegal contraband.

It’s also possible for guard dogs to identify bombs, as it is within their ability to sniff out the materials used in bomb making, for example, Semtex, TNT, C4 and many more types of substances.

On this evidence, guard dogs are still relevant in fighting crime because their noses can pick up scents that we could never hope to match, even with technology on our side. Dogs are still an invaluable crime fighting tool and will be for a long time to come.
