Why Internet Dating
It could be argued that with the increasing single gay population through separation, divorce and even death of a partner is the reason. More mature gay men are out there looking for dating opportunities. These same people are probably not that comfortable anymore with the mating rituals carried out in pubs, bars and clubs, even if those suitable venues exist. However, it seems that the younger generation are also using this medium. This could be due to the popularity of social networks such as Facebook and My Space. The young folk of today (doesn't that make you feel old) were brought up with mobile phones, texting, emailing and instant messenger. They do not see the practices as new fangled but instead as part of the fabric of life. There are other elements of course. Security is one, although that is a contradiction in terms where the internet is concerned. This is more about the security of one's ego and sensibilities. The ability to 'wink' or 'kiss' at someone without that being threatening and then if not successful, the rejection is short lived and not overwhelming. We can all remember when younger waiting all night in a disco to get the courage up to go over and speak to an attractive person who we fancied. Rehearsing what we would say a thousand times over in our heads. Practising something to say if we were rebuffed and our exit strategy for walking away as if we didn't care anyway. And then the moment arrived, 5 minutes before the end of the event. But hang on, who is this other person talking to them?. Damn!! Waited too long, hesitated when weI should have acted. Or finally getting over there and blubbering out our well rehearsed but inept words. The thought of it all gives us butterflies even now, all these years later. So what have we lost? Are we becoming a world of cyber daters who become very good at our keyboard skills but still lack the panache and style when finally meeting in person? Maybe, maybe not. We may not like progress but at the end of the day, that is exactly what it is, progress.
