In this day and age, long term food storage isnt as important as it once was. What people dont realize is that when you store your own food, you not only cut costs, but you also prepare yourself for emergencies.

First of all, you have several ways that you can preserve your food at home for long term food storage. One means is dehydrating your food. This essentially removes the moisture from your food. Why? Well, bacteria and fungi usually feed on moistureby dehydrating your food, you may it less likely that it will spoil. This makes it easy to transport as well as keeps it edible for far longerno refrigeration necessary. Then you have canning. Canning can take a whilesometimes way longer than dehydrating. Not to mention that if its hot in your house already, after you start canning, its just going to get hotter. However, canning your food can increase how long it lasts to several months to even years, depending on what youve bought/how long it lasts anyways.

There are several ways that its important to have long term food storage. Lets face itit cuts down on waste, first of all. If you happen to have a few veggies that would go bad otherwise, you can have them canned and then store them or even take them to your local food bank to help out there. Its up to you, but either way it helps you to save money and also helps out those around you. Lets face it, guys: most of the time, we buy more than we can eat in one day and itll sit in the fridge and eventually end up in the trash can. We throw out thousand of lbs of food each day! This could go to people around your neighborhood who really need it, such as the little old lady next door or anyone else whom you could think of.

You can also make a small profit off of canning your own foodit probably costs fifty cents to can one jar of whatever you have in mind: If you up it to seventy five cents, you could make several dollars. Its not the most profitable way to make money, but it also helps those around you. They wont have to go to the store and spend almost fifty cents more and you get a profitits great!

Take your time when you decide on whether or not to can at home. While its cheaper, it can be quite a bit more time-consuming than going to the grocery store. Its up to you. However, keep in mind that this is still a great way to get the most out of both your purchases and your long term food storage options. With this information in mind you are sure to make your food budget stretch to the maximum potential with all sorts of different food storage ideas. Now just go put them to use.
