Starting a new hobby can be exciting, even if you only start with a few pieces; this is often the case with model railroad trains. Maybe someone in your family gave you few pieces, which had been cared for through the years, to be the start of your own set-up. What you will find, is that even if you only have few pieces, it is often the scenery, most of which you can craft yourself, that really makes your railroad come to life. From realistic mountain ranges, to lifelike people, you can create a setting for your trains that will be unique and interesting.
Deciding upon the scale of your benchwork is among the first things you should do when you get started. It is always a good idea to allow room for expansion beyond the pieces you already have. You can configure your tracks, end to end, or loop to loop, and even plan for a multi-level track system down the road. Maybe you want to plan for some special lighting, or build your benchwork in sections, so that you can display portions of it elsewhere if you choose. The more thoroughly you think out your plan, the more likely it will suit your every need in the future.
Once you have become entrenched in this wonderful hobby, you will quickly find people who share in your passion. Hopefully, some of those people will be in your family, as model railroad trains tend to be a multi-generational hobby, but if not, there are many organizations built around this great pastime. Your local hobby shop or the place where you go for your supplies will likely have information about shows and conventions where you can obtain new additions, or just make new friends. There is even a national organization, NMRA, the National Model Railroad Association, which seeks to promote and share a love of model railroad trains. Whether you join an organization, or simply enjoy this wonderful hobby with your grandchildren in the privacy of your own home, it is a magical way to escape on a miniature train ride to a simpler world.
